I would indulge in and find satisfaction in a direct avenue of anonymous payment between me and the people who created the content I consume digitally, but instead I usually have to actually buy a physical copy at a price I may not agree with, resulting in a situation where a film I adore may be £2.99 in a bargin bin whilst a film I think was mediocre but entertaining enough costs £16.99. But were there was a system in place for me to pay what I think that product is worth, I would certainly use it. So, what it boils down to is - how much is that information worth to me? I confess to obtaining copies of these informations for my personal consumption at little to no cost to myself, and I don't pay for physical copies nearly as much as I would like when I enjoy a product. (I'm deliberately ignoring the costs to create that information in the first place for now)

avi files, mp3s, games, etc, are basically pure information that is stored in a format with no diminishing qualities as its copied. Jewels, DVDs, etc, are things that cost money to manufacture and ship, and they are finite in quantity.

So the big difference, and one we all know and is why those adverts are so obnoxious, is that stealing physical items like that is not easily comparable to stealing data that is inherently easily copyable with no detriment to quality and availability. I was thinking about this the other day, after passing an billboard in the UK showing someone stealing jewellery, with the slogan "You wouldn't do this in the street, so why would you do it at home?"
